A Little Deck

A local customer wanted some decking in a small area just outside their back door. Like all jobs, we met to discuss the client's exact needs and then we ordered in the materials.

So we started how we would any decking job, by bolting the longest side rail onto the most secure area - being the side of the house. Then fitted the fence side rail with halving jointed support rails at every 600mm. Next, we fixed the internal rails at 400mm centres.

Now you may be thinking that this may just be another decking job and nothing unusual here. However, having just fitted the final support rail a little buzzing sound came from just under the rail. This is when we discovered we had just disturbed a bee hive. We decided it best to then move on to building the steps whilst we were still unstung.

When the bees had seemingly disappeared back into their hive we fitted the decking boards ensuring enough room for expansion. Then we fitted the spindles and finished off with a border to add an extra something to the decking and making room for the customers little tree.

We didn't forget about the bees though - drilling a hole for them to happily get in and out of their hive.

The finished decking.
